'''Uh-oh'', this Kiwi retelling of the classic children's tale is likely to prove as popular as the original! In this version, three children venture out in search of the eponymous moa ''swishing and rustling'' across a wide paddock, scalding their feet on ''scorching sizzling sand'', slurping their way through a ''sucky mucky swamp'' and so on. About the author

Patrick McDonald

Patrick McDonald can't remember a time when he hasn't been interested in drawing or some aspect of design. He has always held a strong interest in narrative illustration and so it's no surprise that he has been earning a living illustrating for children ever since he graduated from Massey University of Wellington's School of Design. In 2013 he won the Storylines Gavin Bishop Award for Illustration, which led to the publication of his first children's picture book, A Perfect Chirpy Christmas by Kyle Mewburn. We're Going on a Moa Hunt (Puffin, 2015) is his second picture book. Patrick lives in Petone, Wellington.

Young readers will love reciting the onomatopoeic words. . . . The bold and bright illustrations are peppered with local wildlife. It's fun to try and find the creatures taking cover in the bush, trees, streams, hills and beaches (information on the back flap helps with the search). The two boys and one girl explore on their own and tramp through the challenges with determination. Their expressive faces show their apprehension when they eventually meet the huge bird. The final scene wraps up their adventure and shows why the moa chased them home. This attractive publication celebrates New Zealand's environment, and encourages kids to go outdoors and explore.
