Penguin Random House New Zealand welcomes submissions for novels and other book projects. However, before you submit your work, we would appreciate you reading the following guidelines to ensure your submission is suitable in both format and content. If it doesn’t meet these guidelines, you may like to try another publisher.
When submitting a manuscript for consideration, please send a synopsis and the first three chapters only. Manuscripts should be submitted in hard copy, typed and double-spaced. For children’s picture books please send a full manuscript. Please also include a covering letter with any relevant author information, e.g. previous writing experience or publications. If the book is to be illustrated, please include some samples (please do not send original versions of artwork — copies only).
An acknowledgment of receipt will be sent when a submission is received. Please allow 4 months for your submission to be considered. Because of the large volume of submissions we receive, we are able to respond only to authors whose manuscripts we wish to develop. Please note that we are unable to return material to authors unless a self-addressed, postage paid envelope is enclosed with your submission.
It may be helpful for you to know that we do not accept unsolicited poetry; short stories; adult adventure, fantasy or science fiction novels; plays; screenplays; war diaries or academic texts. You will be able to discern which New Zealand publishers do publish in those genres by checking in bookstores or your local library, or looking at their websites.
Please send manuscript submissions to:

GENERAL INFORMATION AND ADVICE FOR WRITERS
We strongly recommend that writers visit the website of the New Zealand Society of Authors for wide-ranging advice and information about writing and getting published in New Zealand. If you are interested in writing and need general information and advice on how to begin, it is a good idea to look on the internet or in your local library for books that will help you with the genre of writing you are interested in. Getting in touch with a writers' group in your region is also helpful. These groups can offer assistance with the writing process, agents and manuscript assessment services. Penguin Random House New Zealand is unable to assess manuscripts.
DECIDING TO SELF PUBLISH
Alternatively, you can visit a professional services business such as Author Solutions (a member of the Penguin Random House group), which provides fee-based assistance to self-publishing writers. Their key services include:
- Marketing and Publicity
- International Print and Digital Distribution
We have become aware of some online activity encouraging people to pay to be included in our publications. While we are always looking for new and fresh ideas, we do not send unsolicited emails or place advertisements asking for contributors to pay to be included in books published by us. If you think you have been the subject of one of these scams we encourage you to report the scam through www.consumeraffairs.govt.nz/scams
