Are We There Yet?

Fun road trip games and books to keep little kids happy!

Long car trips with young children can feel endless, but a few simple games can turn travel time into play time! Best of all, many classic road-trip games require no screens or special equipment, just imagination and a bit of enthusiasm.

1. I Spy

A timeless favourite. One person says, “I spy with my little eye something that is…” and gives a clue, such as a colour or shape. Younger children can focus on colours (“something red”), while older kids can try letters or sounds.

2. The Animal Game

Perfect for drives through the countryside or even city streets! Kids take turns spotting animals (real or on signs) and making the sound they think it makes. You can also try naming animals from A to Z to stretch the game longer.

3. Counting Games

Ask children to count things they see out the window: trucks, bridges, cows, or traffic lights. This game quietly builds number skills while keeping boredom at bay.

4. Story Builder

Create a story together, one sentence at a time. Each person adds a line, no matter how silly. Young children love hearing their ideas become part of a bigger adventure.

5. Book time!

Read a children's classic aloud such as Alison Lester's Are We There Yet? or Peppa Pig's Peppa's Australian Roadtrip.
