Another Mother's Love

Another Mother's Love is Karen Scott's heart-wrenching real-life account of attempting to parent a CYF foster child. But is a safe home and a family's unconditional love and kindness all that James needs?

A moving story of one family's attempt to make a difference.

In 2011 Karen Scott and Mark Finlay and their six children opened their home and hearts to a sad, skinny five-year-old boy who was placed with them by New Zealand's Child, Youth and Family services. James arrived with nothing other than the clothes he was wearing, supposedly for just a short-term stay. But what followed were two turbulent years as Karen and Mark attempted to parent a very troubled young boy.
Another Mother's Love is a heart-wrenching account of a mother's attempt to nurture her foster child with unconditional love and kindness. However, is love enough? Karen and Mark faced a harrowing decision – to give up James or risk their family's future.

About the author

Karen Scott

Karen Scott grew up in South Auckland, trained as a nurse and worked as a model before backpacking around the world. Her travels led her to Australia, where she had two daughters. Returning to New Zealand as a newly single mother and needing to find a way to support herself and her preschoolers, she launched the parenting magazine Tots to Teens. Then she met Mark Finlay, owner of a national chain of childcare centres and a former All Black. They poured their hearts and souls into making a success of their blended family and their businesses. In 2011 Karen sold her business to be a stay-at-home mum. Between them they have six children, ranging in age from six to nineteen years old. They live on a property near Auckland.
