Black Jack Deluxe 1

Black Jack is recognized as Osamu Tezuka’s third most famous series, after Astro Boy and Kimba, the White Lion. A rich medical drama that mixes mystery, intrigue, suspense and a dash of humor, with a fascinating main character who keeps his caring nature a secret, preferring instead to be perceived as a heartless cad.

Black Jack—the mysterious surgeon whose mercenary ways hide a benevolent heart

Drawing on his own experience as a student of medicine, the God of Manga's late-period masterwork remains his most popular adult series in Japan. This volume presents for the first time in English a curated selection of chapters that have not been published in color since their original appearance in magazine form, along with a treasure trove of related archival material.

About the author

Osamul Tezuka

Osamu Tezuka (1928-89) is the godfather of Japanese manga comics. He originally intended to become a doctor and earned his degree before turning to what was then a medium for children. His many early masterpieces include the series known in the U.S. as Astro Boy. With his sweeping vision, deftly interwined plots, feel for the workings of power, and indefatigable commitment to human dignity, Tezuka elevated manga to an art form. The later Tezuka, who authored Buddha, often had in mind the mature readership that manga gained in the sixties and that had only grown ever since. The Kurosawa of Japanese pop culture, Osamu Tezuka is a twentieth century classic. Osamu Tezuka was a Japanese cartoonist, animator, film producer, and activist. Born in Osaka Prefecture, he is best known as the creator of the comics series Astro Boy, Kimba the White Lion, and Black Jack. His prolific output, pioneering techniques, and innovative redefinitions of genres earned him such titles as "the father of manga," "the god of manga," and "kamisama of manga." Additionally, he is often credited as the "godfather of anime" and is considered the Japanese equivalent to Walt Disney, who served as a major inspiration during Tezuka's formative years.
