Hold That Thought

How we create, strengthen and lose our memories

From the Oxford neuroscientist best known to us as ‘the Menace’ on ITV's The Chase – a show that is the ultimate test of memory – a short guide to all you need to know about your memory.

How exactly does a brain store information? How are our memories first formed? What makes us forget them, or create false or distorted memories? And what happens in dementia or neurodegeneration, when our memories crumble? Looking to the future, how might we keep our memories intact, as our lifespans extend. What will be the impact of AI?

Written by a professional quizzer and neuroscientist, Hold That Thought is a concise, accessible and entertaining guide to all aspects of our memory. Drawing on personal experience and historical case studies, Darragh Ennis touches on subjects as wide-ranging and fascinating as plant and animal memory, our memory’s relationship with taste, smell and sleep, and how we might strengthen our memories to competitive level.

Did you know:

  • Short term memory is only a few seconds
  • Memories exist as physical objects in your brain. Any long-term memory is stored in a trace of neurons in a particular pattern
  • Photographic memory doesn’t really exist
  • Goldfish memories are actually pretty good, they are unfairly maligned!

He then moved to Montreal to research the insect pests of maple syrup plantations before working for thirteen years as a postdoctoral researcher at the Biochemistry Department of the University of Oxford, where he studied RNA biology in fly brains to better understand how memories are made. In 2017 he appeared as a contestant on ITV’s quiz show, The Chase, and joined the series as a ‘Chaser’ (best known as ‘The Menace’) in 2020. Darragh now works in media full time. Praise for Hold That Thought

Brilliant, compulsory reading. In Hold That Thought, Darragh perfects the art of writing entertaining, jargon-free explanations of complex and relevant science, while retaining scientific accuracy and integrity gained during our joint research in Oxford on fly neuroscience.
