S. E. Hinton wrote her first book, The Outsiders, in 1967, when she was seventeen years old. She graduated from the University of Tulsa in 1970, with a degree in education. The following year, she married a fellow student, David. They have one son and live in Tulsa.

S E Hinton was the first recipient of the American Library Association Award for an outstanding contribution to Young Adult Literature. She continues to live in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
