Taylor has created a wonderful story about the takahe. She expertly weaves fact and fiction together, with the help of a cheeky little fantail that mimics Orbell’s curiosity. Takahe keeps disappearing throughout the book, offering just flashes and the briefest of glimpses. Fantail turns to the other birds of the forests for help, including doppelgänger pukeko...Taylor is a master at rendering New Zealand’s unique flora and fauna in beautiful, delicate, yet richly detailed, watercolour.
Rebekah Fraser, NZ Booklovers
The board book is fun and interactive and at the back of it there is some history on the takahe, “who, both in myth and reality, has had a tendency to get lost”.
