John R. Searle was born in Denver, Colorado, in 1932. He attended the University of Wisconsin from 1949 to 1952 and studied at Oxford University , where he received his BA, MA and PhD and was a Rhodes Scholar. He taught as a lecturer in philosophy at Christ Church in Oxford from 1957 to 1959 after which he became a professor of philosophy at the University of California at Berkeley. He has also been a visiting professor at many universities both in the United States and abroad, including the universities of Syracuse, Rutgers, Colorado, SUNY Buffalo, Washington, Michigan, Venice, Frankfurt, Toronto, Campinas (Brazil), Oslo and Oxford. He is the author of many books, including Speech Acts (1969), The Campus War (1971), also published by Penguin, Expression and Meaning (1979) and Intentionality (1983). His works were translated into at least 18 languages.
He lived in Berkeley and was an avid skier and a Secretary Treasurer of Hanzell Vineyards in California.
