Ross Calman

Ross Calman (Ngati Toa, Ngati Raukawa-ki-te-tonga, Ngai Tahu) is an author, editor and licensed translator.

Highlights among the more than 100 books that he has edited, translated or written are He Pukapuka Tataku i nga Mahi a Te Rauparaha Nui | A Record of the Life of the Great Te Rauparaha by Tamihana Te Rauparaha; and Te Tiriti o Waitangi/The Treaty of Waitangi (with Mark Derby and Toby Morris); The Essential Maori Dictionary (with Margaret Sinclair); and He Atua, He Tangata: The World of Maori Mythology (with A. W. Reed).

In 2023 he was awarded an honorary doctor of arts from the University of Canterbury in recognition of his contribution to Māori history, language revitalisation and publishing.

And 2025 brought further career accolades: in August Ross won the Elsie Locke Award for Non-ficton as well as the Margaret Mahy Book of the Year at the New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults for his work on Aotearoa New Zealand's founding document Te Tiriti o Waitangi. In November he was awarded the Prime MInister's Award for Literary Achievement (Non-fiction).

He lives in Wellington with his wife Ariana Tikao and they have two adult children.
