Designed for mid-Primary and reluctant readers in Upper Primary, the Ball Stars tales will appeal to both girls and boys, depicting cultural diversity and gender equity in a natural and non-didactic manner.
Allison Paterson, Magpies, Volume 32
This is a fabulous story about standing up for others, overcoming fears, making new friends and also realising that there is more to life than sitting in front of a computer screen! It is the first in new series that middle level readers will all enjoy. It has both humour and lessons to be learned.
Sam, Lamont Books
The Bench Warmers is a chapter book with a great story, an array of quirky characters and a lot of humour . . . The book tackles diversity well – the school basketball team is made up of both genders, kids from different backgrounds and physicalities (e.g. Australian, Sudanese, tall, very short) and personality types (confident, very quiet etc.). They have an array of abilities and have to learn to appreciate what each person contributes in order to achieve . . . Sporty kids will love the descriptions of the games, while others will enjoy the story of a group of kids overcoming a self-absorbed, hypocritical adult to make things fairer for everyone.
Rachel le Rossignol, CBCA Reading Time
This new junior fiction series, written by David Lawrence, has been produced in partnership with Basketball Australia. While the linking up with the sporting association means there are plenty of tips and terms for basketball lovers to pick up on, the book is fun and humorous and certainly still suitable for readers who have never shot hoops in their life.
Kellie Byrnes, Just Write For Kids blog
The Bench Warmers is filled with basketball moves, techniques and funny commentary and sportsmanship as the team learn to work together supporting each other's abilities and differences . . . This is a fun, easy to read novel for basketball fans.
