Conviction

A Reese Witherspoon x Hello Sunshine Book Club Pick

The brilliant new thriller from the award-winning author of The Long Drop.

From 'the woman who may be Britain’s finest living crime novelist' (Daily Telegraph), Conviction stars a strong female protagonist who is obsessed by true crime podcasts and decides, one day, to investigate one of the unsolved crimes herself.

It’s just a normal morning for Anna McDonald. Gym kits, packed lunches, getting everyone up and ready. Until she opens the front door to her best friend, Estelle. Anna turns to see her own husband at the top of the stairs, suitcase in hand. They’re leaving together and they’re taking Anna’s two daughters with them.

Left alone in the big, dark house, Anna can’t think, she can’t take it in. With her safe, predictable world shattered, she distracts herself with a story: a true-crime podcast. There’s a sunken yacht in the Mediterranean, multiple murders and a hint of power and corruption. Then Anna realises she knew one of the victims in another life. She is convinced she knows what happened. Her past, so carefully hidden until now, will no longer stay silent.

This is a murder she can’t ignore, and she throws herself into investigating the case. But little does she know, her past and present lives are about to collide, sending everything she has worked so hard to achieve into freefall.

Conviction is the compelling and unique new thriller from multiple award-winner and author of THE LONG DROP, Denise Mina.

“Not a single word is wasted in this beautifully written novel. Unsettling, evocative and staggeringly good, it is possibly Mina’s finest achievement”

Daily Express

“A wonderfully atmospheric, unsettling read.”

Louise Rhind-Tutt

“It is clear from the very start of Denise Mina’s Conviction quite how much fun she – and her readers – are about to have… Mina is such a classy writer and Anna is a darkly brilliant creation”

Alison Flood, Observer

“Deeply unsettling and thought provoking in all the best ways”

Doug Johnstone, Big Issue

“A twisting, darkly comic, thrill-a-minute ride across Europe. If you loved Killing Eve, you'll devour Conviction”

Erin Kelly, author of HE SAID/SHE SAID

“A mischievous sense of fun exists alongside a capacity to generate genuine edge-of-your-seat thrills and some thought-provoking moments. You won’t have more fun with a book this year”

Jake Kerridge, Sunday Express

“The Long Drop is an exceptional book. The pages reek of fifties Glasgow, forming an oppressive backdrop to a true crime story that fascinates and appals from start to finish. Mina’s prose cuts to the bone, laying bare the prideful wickedness of men in a tale that is as often touching as it is frightening. A feast of a crime novel.”

Stuart Neville

“Gripping, intricate and wonderfully twisty . . . Superb”

Will Dean, author of Dark Pines

“The Long Drop is a fascinating, quietly insidious work, unsettling but absorbing”

Marcel Berlins, The Times

“Denise Mina brilliantly manages to be funny, heart-wrenching, gut-punching and addictive all at once: a fabulous, captivating novel”

Nicci French

“It is a beautifully written book, a masterpiece by the woman who may be Britain’s finest living crime novelist”

Daily Telegraph

“Denise Mina is crime-writing royalty”

A. J. Finn, author of The Woman in the Window

“Endlessly surprising... This incredible novel...seems to have been written in a white-hot rage.... Mina has always written with a head full of ideas and a mouth full of tough talk. Here, she’s finally got a story big enough to hold it all together.”

New York Times

“Deliciously shadowy.”

Claire Allfree, Metro

“Such a delight: playful, fast-paced, and entirely compulsive”

Ann Cleeves

“Dark, gritty and chilling, it is steeped in the atmosphere and mores of Glasgow in the 1950s”

“Conviction is one of those rare and perfect titles, meaning both a belief profoundly held and to have been found guilty. The genius of the novel is that it reiterates that old phrase that a wise man once said – “the truth will set you free” – and it does so via fiction”

Stuart Kelly, Scotland on Sunday

“I’ve been a fan of Ms Mina for a while, but The Long Drop has to be my favourite. The writing is beautiful and more than once I found myself having to pause, just to take in the sheer elegance of the prose. It’s an absolute gem of a book.”

Abir Mukherjee

“[O]ne of crime fiction’s most acute observers of contemporary society.”

Robert Goddard

“[I] was gripped, impressed by her insight into the mind of a psychopath… A grim novel, but a very good one.”

Allan Massie, Yorkshire Post, 2017 Books of the Year

“Mina…pulls it off with her customary flair and a final flourish”

Alastair Mabbott, Herald

“A wildly entertaining one-off”
