Overhaul: Australia’s world in 2050, and how we should plan for it | A Lowy Institute Paper: Penguin Special

Confronted by US-China conflict, decaying global rules, disruptive new technologies and increasing inequality, Australia needs to rethink its place in the world.

Despite a litany of calamities, the last quarter century was good for the world economy and good for Australia. The next twenty-five present big new global challenges: increasing competition between China and the US, decaying global rules on which smaller countries like Australia rely, disruptive artificial intelligence, and the political threat posed by increasing inequality. Confronted with these realities, Australia needs to rethink its place in the world.

This timely analysis presents a new way of imagining Australia’s future, one demanding a new agenda for Australian politics and statecraft.
