The Housekeeper

Inspired by Daphne du Maurier and the writing of her novel Rebecca, The Housekeeper is an entirely original and fictional imagining of how Rebecca came to be written.

Mrs Danowski (known as ‘Danni’) tells the seductive story of how she became the lover of a glamorous writer visiting the grand Cornish house where Danni works as the housekeeper.

This affair is the most important, life-altering thing that has ever happened to Danni, but after a passionate summer of love Daphne casts her off. Danni feels betrayed, not least when Daphne chooses to fictionalise her as the jealous and vengeful Mrs Danvers in what would become du Maurier’s most triumphantly successful novel, Rebecca. And so Danni determines to make her own revenge... this is her story.
