The Sweet Shop on the Shambles

York 1949. The war may be over, but Yorkshire matriarch Winnie Freeman still has her three daughters to worry about.

The eldest Rose has become firm friends with the controversial new boss of the chocolate Rowntrees factory, and her loving family home no longer feels like a haven.

Middle daughter Annie is struggling after the birth of her second baby, but at least she’s in a strong marriage – isn’t she?

While the youngest, Molly, is refusing to settle down. As sugar rationing ends, she wants to turn the old bakery on the Shambles into a sweetshop.

War and munitions work showed what the Freeman sisters could do – against tough odds, can they turn their dreams into a reality?
