The Booker judges praised Elizabeth Strout's The Things We Never Say as ‘brilliantly understated and all the more powerful for that’. With exquisite prose and profound insight, Strout captures the way grief reverberates through decades, the comfort found in deep friendships and the freedom that comes when we break free of our secrets. It’s the 11th novel from the Pulitzer Prize winner, who was previously shortlisted for the Booker with Oh William! and longlisted in 2016 for My Name Is Lucy Barton.
Marlon James is no stranger to the Booker Prize, having won in 2015 with A Brief History of Seven Killings. Epic and intimate, violent and forgiving, The Disappearers is a tour de force which only James could have written – both an unflinching portrait of the hatred and shame faced by gay men in a society which refuses to accept them, and a deeply human story of acceptance and insight. A win for The Disappearers would put James in exceptionally rare company: only four authors have won the Booker Prize twice.
