NZ Book Awards for Children & YA 2017 winners announced

A huge congratulations to the winners of the 2017 NZ Book Awards for Children & Young Adults!

Young Adult Fiction Award

Congratulations to Maurice Gee who won the Young Adult Fiction Award for his marvelous fantasy novel The Severed Land. The judges said they knew they were in good hands as his elegant writing carried them along on 'an epic and archetypal adventure of warring families, colonialism, mysterious strangers and making allies out of enemies. Not a word is wasted in this taut, thrilling, often brutal and morally complex tale,'

Elsie Locke Award for Non-fiction

Congratulations to Jack and Charlie Marcotte for winning the Elsie Locke Award for non-fiction. Jack and Charlie: Boys of the Bush is narrated by Jack, it shares the adventures of the boys' daily life, as they chop firewood, go fishing and whitebaiting, raft down rivers and camp in the bush. Judges commended the book's unique perspective of two boys living a back-to-the land life and also commented on the beautiful photography.

“This year’s shortlist reminds us that books are powerful vehicles for helping children make sense of their world and gain a better understanding of themselves and others. At times the vividly descriptive writing was brutal and heart-breaking, providing moving portrayals of life through the eyes of children and teenagers. All finalist titles are convincing in their realism, skillfully laced with honour and honesty throughout,” says convenor of judges Pam Jones.

The selection panel includes children’s and YA librarians, education lecturers, authors, academics and professors.

The New Zealand Book Awards for Children & Young Adults are made possible through the generosity, commitment and vision of funders and sponsors: Creative New Zealand, HELL Pizza, Book Tokens (NZ) Ltd, Copyright Licensing NZ, LIANZA, Wellington City Council and Nielsen Book. The awards are administered for the New Zealand Book Awards Trust by the New Zealand Book Council.
